Course in evidence based laboratory medicine in Iceland
Just prior to the XXXIII Nordic Congress in Clinical Chemistry which is to be held in Iceland next year the
Nordic Society of Clinical Chemistry (NFKK) invites colleagues to a course in evidence based laboratory
medicine. The course will be held from June 11-12th 2012 at Sólheimar, a small eco-village located
approximately 65 kilometres east of Reykjavik.

When working in routine clinical chemistry laboratories we are often introduced to tests, technologies and
recommendations. The aim of this course is to give the participants some useful tools for navigating through
the increasing amount of information. The main task will be to teach critical appraisal of scientific literature
and guidelines by focusing on three main topics; how do I formulate the most relevant questions and what
studies will best answer my questions; how do I read an article about diagnostic tests; how are guidelines
developed and what can they be used for?
The course is an introduction to evidence based medicine and is a mixture of lectures and group work with
discussions. The work in groups should facilitate implementation of achieved skill into daily practice. This
course is useful for all colleagues working in routine clinical chemistry laboratories and is especially
recommended for residents.
